A Quick Primer on the Geography of the Known Spirit World

The spiritual world is probably nearly infinite in expanse and complexity. What we know about the spirit world is the tiny part that living humans can explore and then transcribe into their diaries. We can also ask spirits about places beyond where we can see, but the accuracy of the description goes from first hand to second hand.

Traditional spiritual belief systems talk about planes (e.g., astral plane) The Monroe Institute came up with its own map called the Focus levels which they equated to brainwave states of the human explorer. They even reverse-engineered the brainwave states into sounds – binaural beats – that can induce a human to experience a particular Focus level.

Nonetheless, both systems agree for the most part and my experience concurs (up to a point).

The lowest plane is one connected to the physical world. This sometimes called the Real-time zone or Focus 10 – mind awake body asleep. Discarnate spirits can reach this plane, but it’s pretty rare. Think ghosts. Occasionally, friendly spirits, such as my children before they were born accustoming themselves to their new environment.

The next level “up” (or “down” depending on perspective) is the astral plane. This plane in many ways resembles the traditional purgatory or even hell of religions. Ironically, it’s where most astral projectors end up the majority of the time. It’s not dangerous to hang out here but it’s a mess of unconscious/subconscious fragments of both living and non-living people. Imagine being awake in a world where everyone else is sleepwalking. This plane is also where soul retrievals start as we help re-integrate  fragments of the subconscious mind with their Soul, which resides one plane up. The astral plane is divided into about seven subplanes, and we’ll cover those details later.

The next plane “up” is where things get tricky. Monroe Institute gives the catch-all name Focus 27. Theosophists call this plane, the mental or devachanic plane. The weird thing is, from my experience, it’s not one place, but many places and depending on how you get there it can be different. The mental plane, in my experience, is ridiculously difficult to get to, especially if you’re a projector like me. However, it is the place to be. Why? Because it is where you can have reasonable conversation with reasonable folks about anything – all telepathically, of course.
